Renegade Nell Review: Are highway thieves from the past the new pirates? Indeed, it appears to be so. The nefarious profession is receiving a media resurgence thanks to the comedy series The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin on Apple TV+ and now Disney+ Hotstar’s Renegade Nell. Renegade Nell, a character created by Sally Wainwright, turns a regular young English woman from the eighteenth century into a legendary heroine who can return favors just as well as the men. On March 29, the eight-episode series will debut.
Plot of Renegade Nell
The renegade in question, played by Louisa Harland, is Nell Jackson. She helps herself and others in need when she gets help from a magical spirit called Billy Blind (Nick Mohammed). After being falsely accused of murder and being forced to leave their family home, the lower-class Nell and her family—the sisters Roxy (Bo Bragason) and George (Florence Keen)—must clear their family’s name. The notorious outlaw finds herself trying to foil a sinister plot headed by a member of the realm by turning to highway robbery.
Renegade Nell: Composing and Guidance
Along with Emme Hoy and Georgia Christou, Wainwright has penned several of the series’ episodes. She succeeds in infusing the period setting with a sliver of modernity. The women in the story are equally as powerful as the men of that era, and actors of color are integrated into the story. The plotlines start to get a little unclear in the middle when the historical details are added. However, the action and supernatural elements of the grand finale give the show a boost for some gripping drama.
Renegade Nell: Exhibitions
Harland from Derry Girl takes a lively turn as the show’s impulsive, no-nonsense Nell. She travels with a group of strong, eccentric people who encourage her. As Billy Blind, Nick Mohammed serves as Nell’s guardian angel and conscience. Lady Eularia Moggerhanger played by Joely Richardson and Charles Devereux by Frank Dillane are delightfully outrageous members of society, and Nell and her gang are constantly met with hostility from Adrian Lester, Jake Dunn, and Alice Kremelberg.
Renegade Nell: Evaluation
Renegade Nell’s story is entertaining and a lot of fun. The show defies many stereotypes and keeps you laughing with its abundance of humor. Even more entertaining are the fight scenes in which Nell overcomes men twice her size. The only issue with the show is that some of the British accents are hard to understand, especially when they’re spoken quickly. Disney+ Hotstar is currently offering all eight episodes of Renegade Nell for streaming.
